Nitrogen is inert and non-flammable, so regulators can be made from brass, stainless steel or aluminium, but they must be rated for the full cylinder pressure and fitted with a suitable relief device. A pressure gauge shows contents on the inlet side, and a second gauge or flow meter shows what is being delivered. Always open the cylinder valve slowly, keep the adjusting screw released at start-up, and never use oil or grease on any threads.
Regulators should be inspected whenever a cylinder is changed. Look for damaged threads, cracked gauge glass, worn washers and signs of creep, where the outlet pressure rises slowly with the downstream valve closed. Keep caps on spare regulators, store them in a dry place, and have them tested at sensible intervals, for example once a year in regular industrial use. A neglected regulator is the most common cause of avoidable gas loss.
