Because nitrous oxide is liquefied, the cylinder's gauge shows little about its content until almost empty, and the only reliable measure is weight. Each cylinder is therefore stamped with its tare weight, and users can compare the current weight with tare plus net fill. A siphon cylinder, fitted with a dip tube, delivers liquid for vaporisers and special equipment, whereas a standard cylinder delivers vapour when held upright.
