High-pressure storage is the safest, easiest way to move CO₂ in small and medium quantities. Cylinders are rated for a working pressure well above the roughly 57 bar vapour pressure at 20 °C, and a bursting disc protects against overpressure in fire. Because the gas becomes liquid inside the cylinder, a modest 40-litre unit holds far more CO₂ than a gaseous gas of the same volume could.
The word compressed can be misleading, because carbon dioxide at room temperature is liquefied rather than a true compressed gas. At 20 °C it liquefies at about 57 bar, and only above 31 °C, its critical temperature, does it become a single dense fluid. Understanding this helps with filling ratios: we never fill beyond the permitted ratio, leaving the vapour space the cylinder requires. Handling is simple but should never be casual. Transport cylinders upright and secured, use a trolley rather than rolling them, fit the valve cap whenever the cylinder is not connected and report any frosting or hissing at the valve to us immediately.
