The device contains an inlet connection, a pressure-reducing diaphragm and seat, an adjusting screw, and two gauges: one for cylinder contents, one for working pressure. Acetylene regulators attach by a clamp or yoke fitting to the cylinder valve, and the outlet carries a hose connection with a left-hand thread. They must never be used on other gases or fitted with copper-rich parts that can form explosive acetylides. Always open the cylinder valve slowly, no more than one and a half turns.
Routine care extends the life of any regulator. Keep the inlet clean and free of dust, and never use oil or grease on the fittings. Check the seat for wear whenever you change the cylinder, and look for cracks in the gauge glass. Tighten connections with a correctly sized spanner, not with pipe wrenches that can damage the nuts. If the outlet pressure creeps upward when the adjusting screw is released, stop using the unit. Store regulators in a clean, dry place, away from solvents and sources of heat, and fit protective caps to the ports during storage or transport.
