Welding Gas Argon-Nitrogen β protecting duplex and stainless welds
Welding Gas Argon-Nitrogen from REAL GAZ adds a small, controlled amount of nitrogen to an argon shield. In duplex and super-duplex stainless steels, nitrogen helps maintain the balance of austenite and ferrite that is lost when pure argon is used on its own.
The mixture is also used as a purging and backing gas for stainless pipework.

Compositions correspond to EN ISO 14175 group N, and welders often work to EN ISO 15614-1 procedure qualifications for industrial projects with laboratory checking.
π Where ArgonβNitrogen for Weld Shielding Are Used
- βοΈ Duplex stainless welding β a few percent nitrogen compensates for nitrogen loss from the weld pool;
- π’οΈ Oil and gas piping β process lines in corrosive service rely on balanced weld microstructure;
- π Chemical plant fabrication β tanks and heat exchangers in duplex steels are welded with nitrogen-bearing shield;
- π§ Root purging β argonβnitrogen backs the root of stainless pipe joints to prevent oxidation.
π‘ Why Choose REAL GAZ
- β Metallurgical support β nitrogen helps keep corrosion resistance close to the parent metal;
- π§ͺ Defined ratio β the nitrogen fraction is stated on every cylinder label;
- π― Matches the filler β used with duplex filler wires chosen by the procedure;
- π Clean supply β low-moisture gas reduces porosity risk;
- π Certificate of Analysis (CoA) β supplied with every order.
π¬ Quality Control & Safety
- moisture analysis before release;
- gravimetric nitrogen dosing;
- verification of the argon base purity;
- valve and pressure integrity checks.
Cylinders comply with ADR / UN transport rules and relevant EN/ISO standards.
π¦ Grades, Cylinders & Handling
- π Ratios β small nitrogen additions, typically a few percent, are used on duplex grades;
- π Flow β keep flow steady, as excess turbulence can pull air into the pool;
- π Purging β purge pipe interiors thoroughly before starting the root pass;
- π Records β note the gas batch against the weld record.
π§ Why Nitrogen Matters in Duplex Welding
Duplex stainless steels owe their strength and corrosion resistance to roughly equal proportions of austenite and ferrite. During welding, nitrogen can escape from the molten pool, leaving too much ferrite in the weld metal and reducing toughness and pitting resistance. A modest nitrogen addition to the argon shield reduces this loss. Too much nitrogen, however, can cause porosity or an unstable arc, which is why the ratio is fixed and certified. Heat input and interpass temperature still matter, and the filler is normally over-alloyed with nickel. Treat the shielding gas as one controlled variable in a qualified procedure, and record the cylinder batch against each weld. For critical projects, ask for a pre-production trial cylinder to support your procedure qualification record.
