Shielding gases follow EN ISO 14175 classification, while cutting equipment follows ISO 5172 and ISO 2503, with gas welding safety to ISO 5175-1.
Flow rate and gas choice interact. For MIG welding steel, 12 to 18 litres per minute of an argon mixture is common indoors, though draughts call for more shielding or screens. For TIG welding, 6 to 10 litres per minute of argon is typical. Stainless steel often benefits from argon with a small addition of helium or hydrogen for travel speed, while aluminium usually uses pure argon or argon-helium. For cutting, oxygen purity affects speed, because impure oxygen slows the cut and widens the kerf.
