Technical grade should not be used to charge refrigeration systems unless the specification confirms it meets refrigerant requirements. Release of gas to atmosphere should be minimised because of its global warming potential; recovery equipment is recommended wherever practical. Ventilate work areas and avoid use near open flames or hot surfaces.
Technical grade does not mean careless grade. The gas is still supplied in proper pressure equipment, with a specification that states the minimum purity and typical limits on moisture and other halocarbons. It simply is not marketed for charging refrigeration circuits. Some customers prefer it for flushing, leak testing or controlled release experiments, where the price difference matters and the extra refrigerant-grade checks are unnecessary.
