Grades and test methods are discussed with reference to ISO 14114, EN ISO 3807, ISO 9162 for liquefied petroleum gases and ISO 8973 for LPG density calculations.
Technical grades differ from purified and laboratory grades in that they accept a defined level of impurity. Commercial propane normally contains small amounts of propylene, butane and ethane, and a trace odorant so leaks can be smelled. Acetylene contains traces of phosphine, hydrogen sulphide and acetone vapour in practice, so low-impurity grades are chosen for applications where these could affect results. For most heating, cutting and welding tasks the commercial grade is entirely suitable.
