A typical use is the nitrous oxide–acetylene flame in atomic absorption spectrometry, where temperatures near 2,700 °C help break down refractory oxides. Operators must follow the instrument sequence exactly: start with the air-acetylene flame, switch to nitrous oxide, and reverse the order when shutting down, since an incorrect sequence can cause flashback. Burner heads for this flame are a different design from standard air-acetylene heads.
