Choosing between propane and butane depends mainly on temperature. Propane keeps a useful vapour pressure well below freezing, whereas butane gives more energy per litre but vaporises poorly in the cold, so winter outdoor sites usually take propane or a propane-rich mixture. Technical users should also consider the rate of offtake, because a cylinder can only vaporise a limited amount of gas per hour before it chills. Where demand is high we recommend manifolds of several cylinders or an electric or water bath vaporiser. All components should carry a recognised LPG rating, and gas detectors should be mounted low because LPG vapour is heavier than air.
