Argon is about 38% heavier than air and makes up nearly 1% of the atmosphere. Because it is heavier, leaks can pool in pits and low rooms and displace oxygen, so oxygen monitors and ventilation matter. A standard 50 L cylinder at 200 bar holds about 10 m³ of gas.
For welding, argon flow is usually 8 to 15 litres per minute for TIG and somewhat higher for MIG, so a 50 L cylinder can last for several shifts. Higher purity matters most for titanium, zirconium and reactive alloys, where trace oxygen causes discolouration and embrittlement. For analytical work, ask for 5.0 grade with a stated moisture limit, and fit a particle filter at the instrument inlet to protect nebulisers and detectors. Argon is also supplied for use in plasma cutting, additive manufacturing, glove boxes and vacuum furnaces, and we can recommend a grade and cylinder size for each of those needs. Because the gas is inert, it does not react with the weld pool or the sample, but it can still carry moisture picked up from long hoses, so keep hoses short, replace them when aged, and purge before the arc is struck.
