Typical technical grade lies at roughly 98 to 99 % acetylene, with the remainder being air, acetone vapour and traces of other gases. That is acceptable for glassblowing, flame sealing, bending of glass tubes and some heat treatment, but not for flame AAS, where baseline stability depends on purified gas. A laboratory that does both tasks should hold the two grades in separate cylinders and label them clearly.

Acetylene should only be used by trained staff, with the cylinder outside the main teaching room whenever possible. Fit a regulator with outlet pressure no higher than 1.5 bar, a flashback arrestor and a flame-failure device, and keep fire extinguishers and a leak detector close by.
