In oxygen service even a small amount of oil, grease or dust can ignite when gas is compressed rapidly, a process known as adiabatic compression. That is why a valve intended for oxygen should never be fitted with lubricants that are not approved for oxygen, and why hands and tools should be clean when the valve is installed. Open cylinder valves slowly, keep fittings free from contamination and check for leaks with an approved fluid. If a valve has been dropped, shows signs of burning or has been in contact with oil, return it for inspection instead of using it.
