In practice the flow tube is the feature that makes the difference. A pressure gauge on the outlet tells you what the regulator is delivering to the hose, but not how much gas actually leaves the torch or the fitting. The ball in the tube rises and settles at a height proportional to flow, so a welder can set 12 litres per minute of shielding gas, check it again after a change of nozzle, and record the figure on the job card. Scales are normally calibrated for one gas, so always state whether the unit will be used on argon, carbon dioxide or a mixture.
