PROPANE AND ACETYLENE GAS — safe storage and handling of fuel gas
Using propane and acetylene gas safely starts with the cylinder: how it is stored, moved, connected and checked for leaks affects every job that follows.
REAL GAZ supplies both gases and gives practical guidance, such as keeping acetylene cylinders upright and allowing one that has been laid down to stand before use, and keeping propane away from drains and cellars because its vapour is heavier than air.

Handling guidance reflects EN ISO 3807, EN 1442, ISO 14114 and the principles of EN ISO 7225 labelling, supplemented by local fire regulations.
Emergency awareness is part of safe fuel gas use. Everyone working with propane and acetylene should know where the cylinder valves are, how to close them quickly and where the nearest extinguisher stands. If a cylinder leaks, move people away, remove ignition sources and, if safe, close the valve. A heated acetylene cylinder is dangerous and must not be moved or opened. In that case, cool it with water from a safe distance, call the emergency services and report that the cylinder contains acetylene. Post these instructions beside the storage area and review them at each training session.
🏭 Where Propane and Acetylene Cylinders Are Used
- 🏪 Storage rooms and cages — cylinders are stored upright, secured, away from oxidisers and ignition sources, with warning signs displayed;
- 🚚 Moving cylinders on site — trolleys, caps and chains prevent valve damage and falls during transport on site;
- 🔍 Leak detection — an approved leak-detection fluid is used on joints, since flames must never be used to find leaks;
- 🔥 Hot-work permits — fire watch, extinguishers and the clearing of combustibles are part of every cutting or heating job.
