For many repair and fabrication jobs, propane/acetylene gas for welding remains a practical choice, because the equipment is portable and needs no electrical supply.
Acetylene produces the intense flame required to fuse steel, whereas propane is the usual choice for brazing, silver soldering and heating where less heat concentration is desired.

Welding practice refers to ISO 9692 joint preparation, with torches to ISO 5172, regulators to ISO 2503 and shielding gases in arc processes to EN ISO 14175.

Good technique makes gas welding economical. Clean the metal of rust, paint and oil, choose a tip that matches the thickness, and set a soft neutral flame. For steel up to a few millimetres, welders typically use a filler rod of similar diameter to the plate. When brazing with propane, apply flux, heat the joint evenly and let the filler flow by capillary action instead of heating the rod directly. After use, close the fuel valve first, then the oxygen valve, release residual pressure from the hoses and close both cylinder valves.
