Oxygen can ignite oil, grease and fine particles at high pressure, so every component in contact with the gas is selected for oxygen service in line with ISO 15001 and ISO 11114 compatibility principles. Regulator gauges are marked for oxygen and often carry the instruction to keep them free from oil. Open the cylinder valve slowly and with the adjusting screw released, never use lubricants on threads, and never use a regulator that has been in contact with oil. Cylinder colour coding follows EN 1089-3.
Storage and handling rules are strict for oxygen equipment. Keep regulators in their clean bags or boxes until needed, never rest them on greasy benches, and wash hands or wear clean gloves free from oil when fitting them. Cylinders should be stored away from fuel gases, with a separation or a fire-resistant barrier in line with local regulations, and should always be secured against falling.
