Oxygen cylinder valves use dedicated outlet threads, such as DIN 477, BS 341 or CGA 540 depending on the country, which prevents oxygen regulators being fitted to the wrong gas. Never force a mismatched thread and never use adaptors that defeat this protection. Before fitting, check that the valve outlet is clean and dry, crack the valve briefly to clear dust, and use a hand-tightened or properly spanner-tightened nut with the sealing washer in good condition. After use, close the cylinder valve and release pressure from the system before removing the regulator.
Carrying and positioning also matter. Move cylinders with the valve protection cap fitted and on a proper trolley, never roll them by the valve. When a cylinder is empty, close its valve, mark it as empty and keep it separate from full ones. Transport in vehicles should follow ADR guidance, with cylinders secured in a well-ventilated space and the regulators removed first.
