A good preheat flame is neutral: the inner cones are sharp, blue-white and evenly spaced around the tip. A flame with feathery edges carries excess fuel and may deposit carbon on the cut, while a hissing flame with short cones carries excess oxygen and can erode the tip. Once the steel is at red heat, the cutting oxygen lever releases the central jet, and the oxidation reaction itself provides much of the heat that keeps the cut going.
