Flashback arises when fuel gas and oxygen mix back inside the hose or torch and the flame burns inwards. Because oxygen supports combustion strongly, damage in the oxygen line can be rapid. The arrestor stops the flame at its sintered metal element, closes the gas path and keeps the cylinder side isolated. Always check the arrestor after any event and replace it if the manufacturer's guidance requires.
A good arrestor does not excuse poor practice. Purge hoses before lighting, keep hoses free of kinks, replace cracked hoses at once and test the full line for leaks with detection fluid each time a connection is changed. Inspect arrestors at fixed intervals and keep a record.
