Devices are selected to ISO 5175-1 (equivalent to EN 730-1), together with ISO 2503 regulators and ISO 3821 hoses, for use on oxygen and fuel gas lines in workshops and on site.
A flashback happens when the flame speed exceeds the gas flow speed and the flame burns back into the torch, hose or regulator. The usual causes are a blocked tip, low supply pressure, wrong shutdown order or damaged hoses. A fully developed event can ignite a hose or reach the cylinder, so protection is more than a formality. Test the arrestor regularly for flow and non-return action, replace hoses that show cracks or heat damage, and never remove a device because it seems to restrict flow. If a unit has stopped a flashback, take it out of service and have the whole set inspected before work continues.
