Although nitrogen is inert, it is an asphyxiant in confined spaces and it is stored at pressures that can cause injury if equipment fails. Users should secure cylinders upright, use only equipment rated for the full cylinder pressure, and ensure good ventilation in enclosed rooms. A regulator should never be used as a shut-off device for long storage; close the cylinder valve and release the line pressure after work.
When a new regulator is fitted, inspect the cylinder valve outlet and the regulator inlet for dust or damage, crack the valve briefly to blow out debris, and then attach the regulator hand-tight before using the correct spanner. Open the cylinder valve slowly, check connections with a leak-detection fluid approved for gas service, and only then set the outlet pressure on the adjusting knob.
