Nitrogen is inert, dry and non-toxic, but it can displace oxygen in confined spaces, so installation points should be well ventilated. Single-stage regulators are economical and suit jobs where the cylinder is used up quickly, because the small change in outlet pressure as the cylinder empties does not matter. Two-stage designs cost more but keep the delivery pressure almost constant until the cylinder is nearly empty, which is why they are chosen for analytical instruments and long unattended runs.
