For many tasks the essential figure is flow, not pressure. A weld back-purge, for example, typically needs between 5 and 15 litres per minute, enough to displace air without blowing through the root. In sample evaporation the flow is lower still, and a needle valve with a long stroke makes setting it much easier. Flowmeter tubes are available in several ranges, so that the float sits in the middle of the scale where reading accuracy is best. Regulators with fixed orifices are a robust option for field crews who do not want delicate glass tubes, while metal-tube meters suit rough sites. Always vent a flow regulator slowly after use, so that the float does not slam against the stop.

Remember that flowmeter readings are referenced to a stated pressure and temperature. If the outlet pressure differs from the calibration conditions, a correction should be applied. A fixed-orifice device avoids this error where the process is stable.
