Flow-type regulators are calibrated for a specific gas and delivery pressure, so always confirm that the scale is marked for nitrogen. Typical ranges include 0–5, 0–15 and 0–30 l/min, with larger capacities for purging stations. A variable area flowmeter is read at the top of the float, and the outlet needle valve is opened gradually to avoid sudden surges. Where repeatability is critical, mass flow controllers can be specified downstream, with the regulator providing a steady inlet.
Remember that the flow read from a rotameter depends on the outlet pressure and temperature at the meter. If your process pressure changes, the actual flow may differ from the scale reading, and a correction factor or a calibrated mass flow device may be needed. Clean, dry nitrogen also protects the tube, since moisture and dust can cause floats to stick and give misleading values.
