Mount the flowmeter upright so that the float moves freely, and read it at the top of the float. Open cylinder valves slowly, keep oil, grease and fine dust away from every oxygen fitting, and never use sealants that are not approved for oxygen. Close the needle valve when the instrument is idle. Replace the unit if the tube is cracked, the scale is hard to read or the valve no longer shuts firmly.
Typical scales are graduated in litres per minute, and the correct range is the one in which your normal flow sits between about one third and two thirds of the tube. A range that is too large makes small flows hard to read, while one that is too small leaves no room for adjustment.
