Liquid helium has a very low latent heat, so even small heat leaks cause evaporation; vessels are therefore multi-layer insulated and fitted with relief valves. One litre of liquid expands to about 700 litres of gas at ambient temperature, which means closed rooms need oxygen monitoring. Transfer must use insulated, purged lines and trained staff wearing face protection and cryogenic gloves.
Practical handling is vital with cryogenic liquids. Dewars should stand upright on a level floor, never be sealed with a plain stopper, and be moved only with the trolleys provided. Operators need insulated gloves, a face shield and sleeves that cover the wrists, and the transfer area must be well ventilated. A boil-off of a few per cent per day is normal for a quality transport vessel, and we plan deliveries to limit waiting time.
