Helium is preferred over nitrogen or hydrogen as a carrier because it keeps good efficiency over a wide range of linear velocities and is non-flammable. Typical laboratory demand is one to three cylinders of 10 or 20 litres per month per instrument, and a two-cylinder automatic changeover avoids losing a run when a cylinder empties. Always fit a two-stage regulator with a stainless diaphragm and purge it before opening the cylinder.

Label every line with its gas, replace elastomer seals with metal ferrules, and run a blank sequence after each cylinder change to confirm the baseline.
