In a laboratory the same gas may also serve as a zero or carrier reference, so low hydrocarbon and low moisture levels are as important as the oxygen content.

Quality is aligned with EN 12021 for breathing air, ISO 8573-1 for compressed air purity classes and ISO 14175 practice for cleanliness, for process plants and analytical laboratories.
Natural air is not always suitable for a laboratory, so synthetic air is blended from separate oxygen and nitrogen, giving an exact 20.9% oxygen content and very low hydrocarbons. Breathing air for respirators, on the other hand, is limited to under 5 ppm carbon monoxide and 500 ppm carbon dioxide, with moisture kept low enough to prevent freezing in regulators.
A short note on installation: supplied-air systems should always include a pressure-reducing regulator, a flow indicator and a low-pressure alarm, and the user must be trained in the equipment. Industrial hygienists generally recommend a backup cylinder in line, so that an interruption never leaves a worker without air. We can quote complete cylinder racks to this arrangement.
