Typical design references include ISO 1496 for freight containers, DNV 2.7-1 for offshore containers and EN 12079, while gas systems follow EN ISO 10297 and ISO 11114 for material compatibility.
Container layouts vary with the job. A ten-foot unit may carry a single twelve-cylinder rack and a regulator, while a twenty-foot unit can house two racks, a changeover panel, gas detectors and forced ventilation. Floors are steel plate or non-slip grating, internal cylinder restraints prevent movement during transport, and lighting uses fittings suitable for the classified area. External pipe connections are brought to a bulkhead panel so that hoses can be attached without opening the doors. For offshore service the shell, lifting points and doors are designed so that the container can be lifted fully loaded, and a nameplate records the maximum gross mass. Containers can be hired for the length of a campaign or purchased as part of a long-term gas supply arrangement.
