Helium is lighter than air and escapes quickly, so boil-off in an unprotected room can displace oxygen near the ceiling and in confined pits. Install oxygen monitors, route vents outdoors and train technicians in cold-transfer technique. During transfers, pre-cool the siphon with cold gas, keep a slight positive pressure in the dewar to prevent air ingress and monitor the receiving cryostat level. A recovery line that returns boil-off gas to a compressor and cylinder bank can reduce purchased volume noticeably over a year.
