A liquid cylinder works like a large thermos flask: an inner stainless vessel is suspended inside an outer shell, with the space between evacuated and wrapped in multilayer insulation. Because liquid nitrogen expands about 690 times when it evaporates, a 180 litre vessel can yield well over 100 cubic metres of gas. Heat leaking in causes slow evaporation, so unused vessels slowly vent and should be scheduled for regular use. Our fleet is tracked by serial number, and each return is checked for frost patches, damaged feet, loose guard rings and correct gauge readings before it goes back on the filling bay.
