The correct valve begins with a clear definition of the hazard. Is the risk over-pressure from a regulator failure, thermal expansion of trapped liquid, reverse flow from a higher-pressure source or leakage from a broken line? Relief valves are normally set at or just below the maximum allowable working pressure of the protected equipment, with discharge capacity checked against the worst-case flow.
