Beyond welding, argon is used to blanket molten metal, to purge pipe interiors before root welding and to create inert atmospheres in furnaces and glove boxes. Purging with argon before TIG root passes on stainless pipe keeps the inside of the weld free from oxide, which supports corrosion resistance. Residual oxygen is usually brought below 0.1% before welding starts.
Argon is colourless, odourless, non-toxic and non-flammable, but it displaces oxygen. In trenches, tanks, pits and enclosed pipes, it can accumulate and cause asphyxiation without warning. Use oxygen monitors, ensure forced ventilation and follow permit-to-work rules during purging operations. Personnel should receive training on confined space hazards, and cylinders should never be taken into poorly ventilated rooms or lifts when full.
