Industrial argon-helium is used in a surprisingly wide range of processes, from cooling of heat-treated components to atmosphere control in glass forming. Typical blends are 10%, 30%, 50% and 70% helium in argon, supplied in 50-litre cylinders at 200 bar and in packs of 12 or 16 cylinders. For consistent results, process engineers should specify the helium fraction, the permitted tolerance, any limits on moisture or oxygen, and the cylinder format best suited to their handling equipment.
