Hydrogen for Fuel Cells and Welding โ clean energy and metal joining applications
Hydrogen for fuel cells and welding may seem an unlikely pairing, but REAL GAZ supplies both from one catalogue, each with its own purity and blend requirements.
Fuel cells need clean Hโ, while welders often use argon-hydrogen mixes where hydrogen improves heat input and bead appearance.
Fuel cells need clean Hโ, while welders often use argon-hydrogen mixes where hydrogen improves heat input and bead appearance.
Fuel purity is referenced to ISO 14687, while shielding gas mixtures conform to EN ISO 14175 (group R1 and R2 for reducing mixtures).
In austenitic stainless steel and nickel alloys, 2% to 5% hydrogen in argon produces a hotter arc, faster travel speed and cleaner weld surface. It is not suitable for carbon steel or ferritic grades, because of hydrogen cracking risks. Fuel cells, in contrast, need extremely low carbon monoxide and sulfur.
The two uses differ in what counts as a problem. For a fuel cell, a few ppm of carbon monoxide can cause lasting loss of performance, while for welding the main concern is correct hydrogen content and moisture. Always check the welding procedure qualification before using a hydrogen-bearing shielding gas, ensure sufficient ventilation, and keep a suitable detector near the cylinder area, since hydrogen is flammable at concentrations far lower than many people expect. We can propose separate cylinder stores for fuel hydrogen and for argon-hydrogen mixtures, clearly labelled, so that gases for each purpose never get mixed up in a busy workshop. Fuel cell projects often begin with a small demonstration and grow into pilot plants, so we plan the cylinder and manifold arrangements so that they can be extended later without replacing the first regulators and valves.
