The risk in high-pressure oxygen systems is adiabatic compression: when the valve is opened quickly, the sudden compression can heat a small volume of gas enough to ignite a contaminant or a polymer seal. For this reason valves are opened slowly, seats are selected from oxygen-compatible materials, and flow paths avoid sharp changes of direction. Materials follow ISO 11114 guidance, assembly follows ISO 15001, and cylinder valves should be compatible as described in ISO 10156.
A few operating habits make a large difference to safety: stand away from the gauge faces while pressurising, open the cylinder valve fully but slowly, avoid rapid cycling, keep tools and hands clean, and never use a regulator with visible burn marks or soot. If a regulator is suspected of internal contamination, take it out of service and return it for professional cleaning rather than attempting to flush it with solvents on site.
