Cylinder pressure rises with temperature, so a cylinder left in the sun reads noticeably higher than one stored in a cool shed. A properly rated inlet body and a 25 bar gauge allow for this margin. The outlet is typically scaled to 0 to 1.5 bar or slightly above for gauge convenience, but acetylene must never be used above 1.5 bar. Store cylinders upright, keep them away from heat and wait at least 30 minutes after laying a cylinder down before use.
Check the product label and body markings before use: the regulator should clearly state acetylene, its maximum inlet pressure and outlet range. Verify that the clamp or yoke seats fully on the cylinder valve and that the sealing washer is intact. After opening the cylinder valve, watch the contents gauge to confirm the reading is plausible for the cylinder temperature. Sudden pressure drops or a hissing sound suggest a leak, in which case the valve should be closed at once and the joints inspected. Report any damaged cylinder, particularly one that has been heated, to the supplier immediately. Keep a spare sealing washer and a leak-test brush in the toolbox so that routine checks are never skipped for lack of materials.
