The term high pressure refers to the inlet side. A full acetylene cylinder holds roughly 15 to 19 bar at normal ambient temperature, so the regulator body and inlet gauge must be rated well above that, typically with a 25 bar scale. On the outlet, a working pressure of 1.5 bar must not be exceeded, as acetylene becomes unstable above that. Operators should also avoid withdrawing more than about one seventh of the cylinder contents per hour, otherwise acetone is carried into the regulator and hose.
Selecting the right unit begins with the torch. Large cutting nozzles can demand more gas than a small cylinder can deliver without drawing solvent, so large jobs often call for a manifold of several cylinders feeding one regulator. In that case the regulator, hoses and arrestor must be sized for the combined flow. Always keep the gauge lens undamaged, since a cracked gauge may hide a dangerous pressure reading. If the regulator is dropped or the gauge needle will not return to zero, take the unit out of service and have it inspected before it is used again.
