At room temperature, helium has a density near 0.166 kg/m³, against 1.33 kg/m³ for oxygen and 1.16 kg/m³ for nitrogen. A 21% oxygen blend in helium has about one-third of the density of air. Its thermal conductivity is roughly five times higher, and its viscosity is slightly higher than that of air. These values explain the interest in the mixture for flow, heat and breathing resistance studies, but they also mean fittings leak more easily and diffusion is faster.
