Under the EN 1089-3 colour code, helium cylinders carry a brown shoulder. Common sizes are 10, 20, 40 and 50 litres at 200 bar, giving approximately 1.9, 3.8, 7.6 and 9.5 cubic metres of gas respectively. Cylinders must be chained upright, kept away from heat, and moved on trolleys with the valve cap fitted. Never use grease or oil on valves and fittings.
Fittings deserve attention too. Use a regulator with a helium-compatible inlet, a pressure relief device downstream, and leak-tested tubing of the correct pressure class. Check that the valve outlet type matches the regulator before the cylinder is moved, and tighten with a spanner of the right size only. If a connection hisses, close the valve, vent safely and re-seat the fitting instead of forcing it, since damaged threads can fail suddenly.
