In welding, helium raises arc voltage and heat input, giving wider, deeper beads on aluminium and copper; typical mixes contain 25 to 75% helium in argon. As a lifting gas, one cubic metre of helium lifts about 1 kg at sea level, enough for advertising balloons, tethered blimps and meteorological probes. Flow rates for welding are usually 15 to 25 litres per minute, higher than for pure argon.
