Gas type: Propane/Acetylene โ€” choosing the right fuel gas for the job
When equipment is labelled gas type: propane/acetylene, it is designed to run on either of two fuel gases, each with its own flame temperature, heat distribution and handling rules.
REAL GAZ helps you choose between them: acetylene gives a hot, concentrated flame for fast cutting and welding, whereas propane gives a larger volume of gentler heat that suits heating and brazing.
Cylinders and accessories follow EN ISO 3807 for acetylene cylinders, EN 1442 and EN 14140 for LPG cylinders, and ISO 14114 for acetylene installations.
A few practical numbers help the decision. Acetylene burns with oxygen at a flame temperature around 3,100 ยฐC and produces a bright inner cone, which makes it ideal for fast preheating. Propane burns around 2,800 ยฐC but releases most of its heat in the outer flame, which warms a wide area and is gentle on thin or coated material. Propane is also usually cheaper per kilogram, though it needs more oxygen. For occasional heating and brazing propane often wins on cost, while for high-volume cutting acetylene can save time and labour.

๐Ÿญ Where Propane and Acetylene Are Used
  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ Steel cutting โ€” acetylene with oxygen preheats steel quickly, while propane is used on thick sections where a wide flame and clean kerf matter;
  • ๐Ÿ”ง Brazing and soldering โ€” propane burns at a lower temperature and spreads heat evenly across copper pipe and fittings;
  • ๐Ÿ—๏ธ Roofing and shrink wrapping โ€” propane torches soften bitumen membranes and heat-shrink film without a very intense flame point;
  • ๐Ÿš— Workshop heating and straightening โ€” localised heating of bolts, frames and panels is possible with either gas depending on the metal thickness.

๐Ÿ’ก Why Choose REAL GAZ
  • โœ… Honest comparison โ€” we explain flame temperature, preheat time and consumption so you can compare the real cost of each fuel;
  • ๐Ÿงช Correct equipment โ€” regulators, hoses and torches are matched to the gas, since acetylene and propane parts are not interchangeable;
  • ๐ŸŽฏ Both gases from one supplier โ€” you can hold acetylene and propane accounts together and simplify ordering;
  • ๐Ÿ”’ Safe storage advice โ€” acetylene must be stored upright and propane needs ventilated, outdoor or purpose-built storage;
  • ๐Ÿ“„ Certificate of Analysis (CoA) โ€” supplied with every order.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Quality Control & Safety
  • valve and pressure-relief inspection of every cylinder;
  • leak testing at the valve and outlet;
  • check of cylinder test dates and markings;
  • acetylene cylinders checked for sound porous mass condition.
Cylinders are transported in line with ADR / UN rules, with acetylene under UN 1001 and propane under UN 1978.
