Identification follows EN 1089-3 colour coding, EN ISO 7225 precautionary labels and EN ISO 10297 valve outlet conventions for flammable gases.
Colour alone should never be trusted, because paint can fade and colour schemes differ between countries and suppliers. The label, which names the gas and gives its UN number, is the primary identifier, and the valve outlet confirms it. Acetylene cylinders carry a maroon shoulder in many European markets and have a distinctive valve connection, while propane cylinders have a red shoulder or a coloured body depending on the supplier. If a label is missing or unreadable, treat the cylinder as unknown, tag it and return it to the supplier. Never try to identify gas by smell or by opening the valve.
