Double stage regulators are slightly larger and more costly than single stage units, which is justified when consistent pressure matters. Open the cylinder valve slowly, check both gauges, and have the regulator serviced at planned intervals.
The first stage lowers cylinder pressure to a fixed intermediate level, and the second stage reduces it to the working pressure chosen by the operator. Because the second stage sees an almost constant inlet, the outlet pressure barely changes while the cylinder empties from around 200 bar to a few bar.
