In a single-stage regulator the outlet pressure creeps upward as the cylinder empties, because the falling inlet pressure changes the force balance on the valve seat. A second stage in series removes most of that effect, so the first stage works at an intermediate pressure and the second stage fine-tunes the final value. The result is a flat delivery curve that is particularly valuable for overnight sequences and unattended instruments.
Selecting the right outlet range matters as much as the number of stages. A range that is much higher than the working pressure makes fine adjustment difficult, while a range that is too low may not reach the needed value. As a guide, choose a range whose upper limit is about one and a half to two times the working pressure, then confirm the choice against the downstream equipment rating before installation.
