In a two-stage regulator the first stage lowers the cylinder pressure to a fixed intermediate level, usually about 20 to 30 bar, and the second stage then reduces it to the working value. Because the second stage always sees a nearly constant inlet, the outlet pressure changes by only a few hundredths of a bar through the cylinder life, compared with the noticeable rise seen on single-stage designs. Typical delivery ranges are 0-2.5, 0-6 and 0-10 bar, with inlet pressures up to 300 bar for modern helium cylinders. Setting is simple: open the cylinder valve fully, turn the knob until the gauge reads the required value, and lock it if a lock ring is fitted. We recommend replacing diaphragms and seats according to the manufacturer's service schedule, especially when helium is used daily.
