Construction follows ISO 2503; weld gas composition refers to EN ISO 14175 and ISO 6142 for blended mixtures, for industrial and automated welding.
In practice the first stage is factory set, commonly at around 20 to 25 bar, and only the second stage is adjusted by the user. Because the second stage always sees a nearly constant inlet, the supply pressure effect is practically eliminated. This matters for wire-feed welding with narrow process windows, for example thin stainless or aluminium, where a small change in shielding gas flow can show up as porosity or discolouration of the weld. For multiple stations fed from a manifold of cylinders, a double stage regulator at the manifold with simple flowmeters at each torch gives the most predictable results across the whole shop.
