Helium is far lighter than nitrogen, which is why heliox flows with less resistance through narrow passages and why commercial divers use it at depth to reduce gas density and avoid nitrogen narcosis. Each batch is analysed for oxygen content and for trace contaminants such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oil vapour and moisture, so users can confirm the gas before it reaches a mask, chamber or ventilator circuit.
