A refrigerated storage tank is kept cold by its own refrigeration unit and insulation, and it is fitted with pressure relief valves, a level gauge and a vaporiser or injection system. The working pressure of roughly 20 bar is far lower than in cylinders, which allows thinner walls and larger capacity. Cryogenic hoses and fittings must be designed for low temperature, because ordinary rubber becomes brittle and could fail. Liquid CO₂ trapped between closed valves will expand and can rupture lines, so every isolated section needs a relief device. For cooling in a mixer, snow horns or injection lances are fitted.
